Our Approach

A Unique Combination of Expert Content, Learning Methodologies, and Measurement

Salus Global Corporation delivers programs that incorporate adult learning principles, reflective learning, practice modification and evaluation as the foundation for motivating change and maintaining a current clinical knowledge base.  Our programs are based on the principles of High Reliability Organizations (HROs). HROs are characterized as complex, intensely interactive and technical environments where there are a variety of professional disciplines with diverse roles and responsibilities.  These organizations carry out their demanding tasks day in and day out and seldom have a catastrophic error in their operating systems. The public has high expectations for their reliability.

Hospital units have many of the characteristics that define HROs. Salus believes that the following HRO key values and principles can be successfully adopted within the culture of hospital units:

  • Safety is the priority and is everyone's responsibility;
  • Operations are a team effort;
  • Communication is highly valued
  • Hierarchy disappears in an emergency.  Decisions about safety can be made any level of the organization;
  • Emergencies are rehearsed;
  • There is multidisciplinary review of routine processes, No Harm and Harm events.

Salus' programs foster team function and communities of practice (CoPs) as the most effective and efficient way to address the barriers to patient safety. CoPs involve groups with a common interest where reflective learning results in a shared knowledge.  This knowledge bank is used by the multidisciplinary team to problem solve and manage patient care processes.

Our current culture of blame in addressing patient occurrences/events is recognized as a significant barrier to improving patient safety. Salus' programs focus on the review of these events to find causes and not assign blame.  The emphasis in the event review process is to study the systems involved, make findings accessible, and make recommendations to appropriate levels and departments within the organization.
