Culture Assessment Service
The necessity of developing a strong safety culture when improving patient safety performance has gained widespread acceptance in recent years. Healthcare policy-makers and accreditation services worldwide have identified the importance of creating a culture of safety within all healthcare settings.
Measuring culture change and improvements can be challenging for many hospital-based healthcare teams. In 2004, the healthcare safety experts at Salus Global Corporation developed a psychometrically tested culture assessment tool for teams to easily and objectively measure culture change in the work environment in hospitals. Since 2005 over 200 teams including over 10000 participants have utilized this tool to effectively measure culture change on their units when implementing Salus Global Corporation’s various patient safety programs.
Salus Global Corporation supports a model of care where patient safety is the priority and traditional hierarchy and practices are replaced with a model of teamwork and the facilitation of an environment of working and learning together. The culture must embrace patient safety as the priority and as everyone’s responsibility all of the time.
Culture is defined as a combination of:
- Shared values
- Beliefs about how things work
- Behavior, or how we act
Culture really reflects the behavioral norms in a group or setting or simply ‘How we do thing around here.’
The Culture Assessment Survey is based on six elements considered critical to a robust patient safety environment:
- Empowering People
- Learning
- Open Communication
- Patient Safety is a priority
- Teamwork
- Valuing Individuals
This tool provides a detailed picture of the culture of safety. It will help individuals, teams and organizations identify gaps in their patient safety culture from which strategies can be put in place to focus on key areas for improvement. Recommendations will be made and, if needed, the Salus Solutions team can help support the setting of patient safety goals, apply solutions and evaluate their progress by repeating the survey within a given timeframe.
The survey and report provide an efficient and simple way to accurately assess the culture of patient safety within a unit or at an organizational level. A detailed report is provided for the team to be able to objectively reflect on their strengths and growth opportunities and supports improving the patient safety culture on the unit.
